| Objective of Summer School |

Importance of tribology for sustainable reliability can not be over-emphasized. It is reported that loss due to improper understanding and application of tribology is over 3% of GDP of the developed countries like the USA. We can well imagine the state of affairs in our country, where the awareness about importance, understanding and application of science and technology of tribology is rather low. The engineers coming out of colleges will be responsible for improving and maintaining the reliability of plants and their equipment. In industry, however, emphasis is given to preventive maintenance and repair / rectification activities. Understanding of the fundamental principles of tribology is neglected, even though poor tribological practices may be responsible for over 40% of the breakdowns.
It has been noticed that this important subject of Tribology does not get appropriate coverage in the engineering curriculum in our country. Inappropriate understanding on application of Tribology is one of the major reasons of equipment failures in the industry.
It is with this background the Tribology Society of India (TSI), the Petrotech Society and IndianOil Corporation Ltd jointly organized the “1st Summer School in Tribology’, from10-13 June 2009 at IndianOil Institute of Petroleum Management (IiPM) Gurgaon, to reinforce the need for continued education in Tribology - an inter-disciplinary science and technology of friction, wear and lubrication. |

| Highlights of the Programme |

The programme was inaugurated by Mr. B N Bankapur, Director (Refineries), IndianOil Corporation Ltd on 10th June 2009. Other dignitaries present during the inaugural function were Mr Anand Kumar, President (TSI) and Director (R&D) – IOCL, Dr R K Malhotra , Vice President (TSI) and Executive Director - IOCL R&D, Mr K K Gupta, Executive Director (IiPM) and Mr J L Raina, Secretary General & CEO, Petrotech Society.
During the 4-day technical programme, a wide variety of topics in tribology were covered by eminent experts.
The programme was concluded by the Valedictory Session, where the Speaker was Dr G K Sharma, Ex President TSI and Director (Technical), NATRiP, Delhi. The other speaker during the valedictory function was E.D. (IiPM). While speaking on his impressions on 1st Summer School in Tribology, ED (IiPM) mentioned that the programme was very well received and IiPM would continue to associate itself with the future summer schools in tribology.
The programme was attended by about 60 participants from academia and industry.
