The second World Tribology Congress was held during 3rd7th September, 2001 in Vienna, Austria. Nearly 1000 delegates from over 50 countries attended the conference. It may be recalled that the previous Worid Tribology Congress took place in London four years ago, in the same hall, exactly sixty years after the first ever-international conference dealing exclusively with friction, wear and lubrication.
In the inaugural address , Prof. H. Peter Jost, President, International Tribology Council pointed out that one of the principal aims of Tribology Congress of Vienna was to fight the lack of awareness and to storm the bastion of ignorance about our subject. He further added that in today's world relying on computers, tribological failure of magnetic storage system would have catastrophic consequences. Tribologically caused unreliability in a spacecraft would not only be extremely expensive but also risk human lives. The Tribological aspects in medical engineering are crucial to prevent unnecessary pain, suffering - even death. In our daily lives injuries and death have been caused in such areas as railways, conveyors and many others, most of which were avoidable had Tribological laws been followed in design and operation.
The exhibition at the venue had participation from lubricant manufacturers, test laboratories, publishers, equipment manufacturers, plastic injection
moulders, electroplaters and technical societies.
While a healthy participation from Europe was natural, there was a remarkably strong Japanese presence. They outnumbered participation from every other country. Range of their papers was very broad and application oriented. It was announced at the 2nd World Tribology Congress in Vienna that Professor
Dr-ing Wilfried J Bartz, one of the world's best known and highly regarded
Tribologists, was the Tribology Gold Medal Winner for 2001.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Sir,
I have just received our Society's maiden newsletter. To say the least, I am very much impressed by the contents. This is what I aspired for a long time. Thanks for bringing out a nice issue against all odds. Hope you would continue bringing out more issues like this with the same missionary zeaT, which Hyderabad has been awarded the "Young Engineer of the has been seen in the pages of this newsletter.
The article on Dr. K. S. Ramayya is informative and makes interesting reading. I hope you would bring out more tributes like this in the future issues also.
There are some spelling mistakes in this issue. Hope they would not find a place in the future issues.
Once again, I thank you for bringing out the excellent newsletter.
With regards,
Anandan. N
